Neuropsychological Evaluations

What is a neuropsychological evaluation?

These evaluations assess numerous functional cognitive domains, including:


  • General reasoning and problem-solving skills (i.e., intelligence)
  • Attention
  • Executive functioning (e.g., cognitive, behavioral, and emotional regulation)
  • Memory
  • Language
  • Visual motor 
  • Visual perception


Assessment of general psychological processes, such as behavior and emotions, may also be included. 

How can an evaluation help?

  • Provide diagnostic clarification
  • Outline potential treatment options and provide referrals
  • Assist with accessing therapies and school help
  • Establish baseline functioning (e.g., before interventions, such as medication or surgery)
  • Monitor functioning over time to assess for improvements and declines

Who might benefit from an evaluation?

Individuals with complex medical conditions that may affect cognition, such as: 


  • Seizures/epilepsy
  • Traumatic brain injuries
  • Acquired brain injuries (e.g., stroke)
  • Cancer affecting the central nervous system (brain and spinal cord)
  • Chemotherapy and/or radiation therapy targeting the central nervous system
  • Cerebral palsy
  • Spina bifida
  • Concerns associated with a history of prematurity and/or low birth weight
