Neuropsychological Evaluations
What is a neuropsychological evaluation?
These evaluations assess numerous functional cognitive domains, including:
- General reasoning and problem-solving skills (i.e., intelligence)
- Attention
- Executive functioning (e.g., cognitive, behavioral, and emotional regulation)
- Memory
- Language
- Visual motor
- Visual perception
Assessment of general psychological processes, such as behavior and emotions, may also be included.
How can an evaluation help?
- Provide diagnostic clarification
- Outline potential treatment options and provide referrals
- Assist with accessing therapies and school help
- Establish baseline functioning (e.g., before interventions, such as medication or surgery)
- Monitor functioning over time to assess for improvements and declines
Who might benefit from an evaluation?
Individuals with complex medical conditions that may affect cognition, such as:
- Seizures/epilepsy
- Traumatic brain injuries
- Acquired brain injuries (e.g., stroke)
- Cancer affecting the central nervous system (brain and spinal cord)
- Chemotherapy and/or radiation therapy targeting the central nervous system
- Cerebral palsy
- Spina bifida
- Concerns associated with a history of prematurity and/or low birth weight
